Destination: Kidepo Valley National Park
1.Location
Kidepo Valley National Park is situated in the remote northeastern corner of Uganda, near the
borders with South Sudan and Kenya. The park is in the Karamoja region and lies within the
rugged, semi-arid valleys between the borders.
2.Distance and Travel Time from Kampala
The distance from Kampala, Uganda's capital city, to Kidepo Valley National Park is
approximately 700 kilometers (435 miles). Travel time can vary significantly depending on the
mode of transport and road conditions:
– By Road The journey can take around 10 to 12 hours using a vehicle depending on the route
and traffic conditions. The most common route is Kampala – Gulu – Kitgum – Kidepo. It is
advisable to use a 4×4 vehicle due to the rough and sometimes challenging road conditions,
especially during the rainy season.
– By Air, A quicker option is to take a domestic flight from Entebbe International Airport or
Kajjansi Airstrip to Kidepo Airstrip, which takes about 1.5 to 2 hours. From the airstrip, it is a
short drive to the park .( Apoka Air strip near Apoka safari lodge,which is strategically located
within kidepo valley national park.
3.Animal Species
Kidepo Valley National Park is renowned for its rich biodiversity and unique wildlife, including;
– Mammals,
The park is home to over 77 mammal species, including ; elephants, leopards, cheetahs,
buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, elands, oribis, and several species of antelopes. Notably, it hosts
species that are not commonly found in other Ugandan parks, such as the cheetah, striped
hyena, and the caracal.
– Birds;
With over 475 bird species, Kidepo is a birdwatcher's paradise. Notable species include the
ostrich, kori bustard, secretary bird, Abyssinian ground hornbill, and the rare Karamoja apalis.
4.Activities
Visitors to Kidepo Valley National Park can engage in a variety of activities, including:
– Game Drives, The park offers thrilling game drives, especially in the Narus Valley and along
the Kidepo River. Early morning and late afternoon are the best times for viewing wildlife i.e
striped hyenas, caracal, cheetah ,lions etc.
– Bird Watching, With its diverse birdlife, bird watching is a popular activity. The park’s varied habitats provide excellent opportunities to spot numerous bird species. i.e, the secretary bird, ostrich ,Kori bustard, Karamoja apalis etc .
– Nature Walks, Guided nature walks allow visitors to explore the park on foot, offering a closer
look at its flora and fauna. These walks can be arranged around the Narus Valley and other
designated areas.
– Cultural Experiences, Visits to the local Karamojong and IK communities provide insights into
the traditional lifestyles and cultures of the people living near the park. These tours often include
visits to homesteads, traditional dances, and craft markets.
– Hiking, There are several hiking trails within the park, including trails to the Lomej Mountains and Morungole Range, offering stunning views of the park’s landscape and wildlife.
