1. Location and Distance Kampala:
From Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is located in Nakasongola District in Uganda. It lies about 176
kilometers (109 miles) north of Kampala, Uganda's capital. The sanctuary is accessible via the
Kampala-Gulu Highway, and the journey typically takes around 2.5 to 3 hours by car, depending
on traffic and road conditions.
2. History
Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary was established in 2005 as a collaborative effort between the Rhino Fund
Uganda and the Uganda Wildlife Authority. The main purpose of the sanctuary is to reintroduce
rhinoceroses to Uganda, where they had been extinct since 1983 due to poaching and civil
wars. The sanctuary started with the introduction of six southern white rhinos, which have since
grown in number through successful breeding programs.
