Destination: Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary

1. Location and Distance Kampala:
From Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is located in Nakasongola District in Uganda. It lies about 176
kilometers (109 miles) north of Kampala, Uganda's capital. The sanctuary is accessible via the
Kampala-Gulu Highway, and the journey typically takes around 2.5 to 3 hours by car, depending
on traffic and road conditions.

2. History
Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary was established in 2005 as a collaborative effort between the Rhino Fund
Uganda and the Uganda Wildlife Authority. The main purpose of the sanctuary is to reintroduce
rhinoceroses to Uganda, where they had been extinct since 1983 due to poaching and civil
wars. The sanctuary started with the introduction of six southern white rhinos, which have since
grown in number through successful breeding programs.

3. Activities

1.Rhino Tracking, Visitors can go on guided walks to observe the rhinos in their natural habitat.
These guided tours provide educational insights about rhinos and conservation efforts.

2. Bird Watching, The sanctuary is home to over 300 bird species, making it a popular
destination for bird watchers. Species such as the shoebill stork, African fish eagle, and various
kingfishers can be spotted.

3. Nature Walks, There are several trails within the sanctuary where visitors can explore the diverse flora and fauna, including a variety of mammals, reptiles, and plant species.

4. Shoebill Trekking, One of the highlights for bird enthusiasts is trekking to see the rare and elusive shoebill stork in the wetlands of the sanctuary.

5. Night Walks, Guided night walks offer the opportunity to see nocturnal animals and learn
about their behaviors.
