Destination: MBURO NATIONAL PARK

1.Location and Distance from Kampala:
Lake Mburo National Park is situated in western Uganda, near the towns of Mbarara and
Lyantonde.The park is about 240 kilometers (150 miles) southwest of Kampala, the capital city.
It can be accessed via the Kampala-Mbarara highway, and the drive generally takes around 4 to 5 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions.

2. Brief History:
Lake Mburo National Park was initially designated as a controlled hunting area in 1933, and
later it was declared a game reserve in 1963. In 1983, it was upgraded to national park status to
protect its unique ecosystems and abundant wildlife. The park is named after Lake Mburo, the
largest of the five lakes within its borders. According to local legend, the lake and surrounding
area were named after two brothers, Kigarama and Mburo. Kigarama had a premonition of a flood and warned his brother to move to higher ground. Mburo ignored the warning, and the area eventually flooded, creating Lake Mburo.

3. Activities:
1. Game Drives, Guided game drives are a popular activity, allowing visitors to see a variety of animals, including zebras, impalas, buffaloes, elands, warthogs, and sometimes leopards.

– Buffaloes, Often seen grazing in the park’s grasslands.
– Elands ,The largest antelope species, found in significant numbers.

– Topi, A species of antelope commonly found here.
– Giraffes, Recently reintroduced to the park.
– Hippos, Found in and around the lakes.

– Kingfishers ,Several species, including the giant kingfisher.
– Pelicans, Often seen during boat trips.
– Red-Faced Barbet, One of the park’s special bird species.
– African Finfoot, A shy bird found along the lake shores.
– Crested Crane(Grey crowned crane) Uganda’s national bird, also present in the park.
– Rufous-bellied Heron, Found in the wetlands.
