1.Location,
Mount Elgon National Park is located in Eastern Uganda, straddling the border
with Kenya. The park encompasses Mount Elgon, an extinct shield volcano with
one of the largest calderas in the world. The Ugandan side of the park is
situated in the districts of Mbale, Kapchorwa, and Sironko.
2.Distance from Kampala
The distance from Kampala to Mount Elgon National Park is approximately 235
kilometers (146 miles). Travel time can vary depending on the mode of transport
and road conditions:
– By Road, The journey from Kampala to Mount Elgon National Park typically
takes about (4 – 6) hours by road transport. The most common route is via Jinja
and Mbale. The roads are generally in good condition, but some sections,
especially within the park, may require a 4×4 vehicle.
– By Air .Although there are no direct commercial flights to the park, you can fly to
Soroti or Jinja and then drive to the park. Charter flights can also be arranged to
airstrips near the park.
3. Animal Species
Mount Elgon National Park is home to a variety of wildlife, though it is not as
densely populated as some of Uganda's savannah parks. Key animal species
include:
– Mammals, The park hosts elephants, buffaloes, defassa waterbucks, oribis,
duikers, and bushbucks. Primates such as blue monkeys, black-and-white
colobus monkeys, and De Brazza's monkeys can also be found in mt Elgon
national park.
– Birds, the park is a birdwatcher's paradise, with over 300 bird species recorded.
Notable species include the Jackson's francolin, lammergeier (bearded vulture),
African goshawk, eastern bronze-naped pigeon, and the endangered Shelley’s
